Notes from the Student Success Team

The following suggestions may be helpful when your child is studying for tests in content areas such as history or science. Encourage your child to:

  • Assemble all relevant materials before he begins, namely, textbooks, class notes, homework, and old quizzes.
  • Make strategy cards for important concepts or terms by listing the term on the front of the card. On the back of the card, your child can list the key information and a memory strategy.
  • Review class notes, homework, and quizzes, highlighting important information.
  • Make a chart of the important events and note their causes and consequences.
  • Predict possible essay questions and jot down notes for answering each question.
  • Explain the main ideas of the chapter to a parent or friend.
  • Have friend or parent quiz him.
  • Make a time-line of important events in the chapter.
  • Answer questions at the ends of the chapters.

Saint Thomas More School provides a safe learning environment in which I, as a unique child of God, strive to become the person God intends for me to be through academic achievement and acts of justice, love, and service based in our Catholic religious beliefs.

About Us
In 2001, a Student Success Center was established to insure that all students experience academic success. The goal for the center (resource room) is that each child is able to learn and master skills at their own pace.

The Student Success Team provides assistance to teachers modifying curriculum in the classroom. In addition, the team creates alternative assignments that parallel the concepts being taught in the classroom for students who  are performing below grade level in a subject.

The Success Center provides individual and small group instruction to students. Some students complete tests in the center as indicated by their education plan.

The Student Success Center is available to any student in the school who needs help, not just students specifically identified by an Individual Service  Plan.

Academic evaluations are completed by the team with all new students to the school and any student referred by a teacher or parent.

Mrs. Kathy Murphy-Marx, M.A.T., is a certified Special Education  teacher and  holds a Masters Degree in  the Art of Teaching and staffs the Student Success Center. Mrs. Peggy Van Dyke,M.A., coordinator, is also a certified Special Education  teacher and holds a Masters Degree in Learning Disabilities and Speech and Language.
