The Junior High
English program is designed to prepare students to
meet the challenge of communication—whether written
or spoken. In this course a familiarity and
proficiency in the use of grammar is stressed.
Grammar is important for two reasons: to provide a
basis for instruction in usage and to facilitate the
teaching of writing. Grammar makes possible the
efficient teaching of such broad concepts as
agreement, pronoun reference, and proper placement
of modifiers. Furthermore, it establishes a
vocabulary for discussing sentence structure which
is crucial to the teaching of composition.
Good writing involves
technical accuracy and much more. Therefore,
clarity of expression is also stressed. The
thesaurus is introduced in the seventh grade to help
students discriminate in their choice of words.
Refinements in
usage are added in eighth grade as the students
become able to understand them and employ them in
speaking and writing.

with precision and zeal is the primary goal of
English classes in the seventh and eighth grades.
