“I promise you every day your child will learn something.  Some days they’ll bring it home in their hands.  Some days they’ll bring it home in their heads.  And some days they’ll bring it home in their hearts.”

Mrs. Spiller's Notes

Dear Parents and families,
Welcome to Second Grade! I am pleased to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to my class. I am so excited to begin another school year.  I have been teaching 2nd Grade at St. Thomas More for the last 9 years. I thoroughly enjoy teaching this age level.
There are many exciting things planned for this year. Each week you will learn about these things by reading the “Friday Flyer.” The flyers are yours to keep as a reference throughout the week. This note will come home in the weekly Friday folder. The folder will also contain your child’s work from the week. One side of the folder is used for papers you can keep, the other side is for papers you need to sign and return. Please go over the papers in the folder and review the concepts with your child. This will help your child better understand the concepts taught. Return the folder on Monday.
There will be a “Go Home” folder coming home daily. This folder will contain work that was completed together in class, unfinished work that needs to be completed at home and also any important notes from the day. The folder and the work in it are your child’s responsibility; however, it may help your child if you remind him/her to go through this folder to see if there is any homework. The folder needs to be returned to school each day.
We will have a “Star Student” each week. The students will be chosen randomly. Once chosen, the child will complete an assigned poster and fill the “Me Box.” The children fill the “Me Box” with things special to them. This is their chance to have “show and tell.” Your child can also bring treats on his/her share day. I will send more information when your child is chosen.

We will have an “Estimation Jar” to help the children learn how to make close estimates. Each Friday a child will be chosen to take the jar home. When the jar comes home, fill it with items you feel appropriate. Some ideas are: pencils, suckers, candy, stickers, or erasers. It works best if the items are individually sealed or wrapped. Please put the number of items in a sealed envelope. Don’t let your child know how many are in the jar. Return the jar to school on Monday. The items will not be returned, they will be shared with the class.
This year we will have P.E with Ms. Weber in the gym. Students need to wear appropriate shoes on P.E days. Our P.E days are Day 2 and Day 5. Also remember that school begins at 7:50 A.M.
I look forward to meeting you and sharing in your child’s successes of 2nd grade. I am enclosing a student information sheet. Please fill it out and return it to school as soon as possible. Your input on this will assist me as I work with your child. Please return any other forms sent home today ASAP. In addition, if your child was not baptized at STM, please make sure the school has a copy of your child’s baptismal record. Second grade involves monumental steps in your child’s faith. We need the baptism record as we prepare for 1st Reconciliation and1st Communion.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Spiller
